Saint Laurent Does Grunge

Grunge looks at Saint Laurent You could almost hear Nirvana’s Teen Spirit playing in the background as Hedi sent looks down the runway. The models hair was greasy and makeup smudged with careless angst. Flannel shirt were worn with more feminine lace dresses, fishnet stockings, motorcycle leather jacket, and combat boots. Dresses were short with peter-pan collars, conjuring images of a Lolita look, which were popular during the grunge era. This is not the Saint Laurent of the past. Heidi made little effort to play with the code of the Saint Laurent heritage, but this collection will surely attract a younger crowd to this historic label....

Dior Goes Pop

Pop art motif at Dior. It’s not the first time Raf Simon has incorporated the art world into his ready-to-wear collection. For Fall 2013 Christian Dior collection, Raf paid homage to Andy Warhol by using his early drawings as a recurring motif on the clothes. The drawings were embroidered on the bodice of simple strapless dresses or sporadically scattered throughout the outfits. Thus far, this is the most whimsical and playful collection Raf has done for Dior, but still paid respect to the house code....

Balenciaga’s Pallet Cleanser

Clean start at Balenciaga When Alexander Wang was appointed the head designer for the legendary fashion house, Balenciaga, I was more than skeptical of Wang’s ability to take on such an historic brand. Yes, he is extremely talented and has built quite a following at his eponymous line, but he is label is still very young. Not to mention, Wang has quite large shoes to fill, Nicolas Ghesquiere has been at Balenciaga for over a decade before his sudden departure from the fashion label.   Alexander Wang presented his first collection for Balenciaga today in Paris and he took this as an opportunity to start with a pallet cleanser. The clothes were mostly in monochrome colors and the silhouette...

The Morning After

Menswear inspiration at Dries Van Noten. Dries Van Noten’s Fall 2013 menswear collection was all about the clothes guys throw on when they’re making a quick exit doing the walk of shame. By mistake, they may have picked up the girl’s blouse, trousers, bathrobe, etc. For his women’s wear collection it’s the girl’s turn to borrow some pieces from the guy’s bedroom floor. Mixing boyfriend’s baggy pants and coats with feminine pieces one might have worn on a night out at the bar. Oversized coats were belted to give more shape and baggy grey flannel trousers are paired back to feminine blouses or a white men’s shirt worn with embellished skirts....

Jil Sander , Standing at the CROSSROADS

Jil Sander Fall 2013 Jil Sander has dusted off herself and is back. She has reversed the aging process and has gone back to doing what she does best. The collection, presented on a runway set with a metallic geometric sculpture, installed into the floor, was indeed all about shape. Miss Sander, an uber modernist, presented coats and jackets, nipped at the waist and below the bust. Hemlines fell dramatically to just below the knees. Trousers were slim and reached the ankle. Colors were predominantly black with blues, greys, oranges, yellow, eggplant, and a hint of metallic gold foil attached just right where its needed most. Fabrics were wool, cashmere, leather, pony hair and fur. Miss Sander gave her...

Prada’s Great Hits

There's a lot to be said about individuality. Miucccia Prada has proven that. The collection that was presented in Milan seems to incorporate Prada's greatest hits , as I remember these silhouettes quite well. She presented the wasp waisted Sicilian artists ingenue. One glimpse of the first exit brings to mind a young Sofia Loren complete with greasy coif and in a state of undress. Skirts were full in wool and in glazed leather or straight with a hint of asymmetry in striped tweed. Coats were in rich muted colors trimmed in fur. The belt is the key accessory in gold worn with peep toe pumps or loafers and 1940's doctors' bags or train cases, making the Prada woman oblivious to the...

Year of the Python

Frida Gianini has return to the dark side, it's a stark contrast to the bright colors she sent down the runway for spring. She may be two weeks away from giving birth to her first child, but form-fitting, sexy dressing is still very much on her mind. For fall 2013, the strongest body hugging attires were done in black python, weather in the form of body conscious dresses or fitted skirt suits with beyond thigh high slits. The look is a fashionable cross between a sexy secretary and a character from The Matrix. ...
