Interview By Patric Chauvez

I recently had the pleasure of catching up with designer Maria Cornejo during her exciting trunk show visit last week with Ikram and her incredible staff. This is what she shared…

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION PHILOSOPHY?

It’s a philosophy other than a fashion philosophy – it’s about making women feel good about their bodies and how the clothes drape on each woman, so a lot has to do with a specific shoulder seam or side seam, so it becomes much more about the actual woman.

WHY ZERO IN ZERO BY MARIA CORNEJO?

Zero is an organic shape. It has no beginning nor end. It does not add or subtract – it is the most natural shape in the world.

WE LOVE THE FACT THAT SOME OF YOUR PIECES CAN BE WORN BY A WOMAN WITH A FULLER FIGURE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?

I think the collection is for all ages and body types, and I like that. Just because you may have a curvy body doesn’t mean you are are not sexy…

Mariia Cornejo Fashion WHAT ARE YOUR MUST HAVE ITEMS FOR SPRING SUMMER 2015?

‘It’s hard to choose, Heli tunic & culottes, the Evie top, the Frock coat, these are some of the things I’ve been wearing a lot.’

YOU’VE HAD THE HONOR OF DRESSING FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA. WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT ON HILLARY CLINTON’S STYLE?

I would love to see Hillary in one of my jumpsuits. That would be fantastic!

I SEE YOU YOU ARE CARRYING CERAMIC PIECES MADE BY BRIDGET ANN CLARK EXCLUSIVELY AT YOUR NOLITA, BLEECKER ADDRESS. WILL YOU BE MOVING MORE INTO SELECT ITEMS FOR THE HOME?

Maria-Cornejo-_-Knoll

Collaboration with Knoll

I love home. We actually did a collaboration with Knoll. It’s about lifestyle right now. I think it’s interesting to not only design clothing, but beautiful inspiring pieces surrounding you in your environment as well.

DESCRIBE MARIA CORNEJO IN ONE SENTENCE.

I’m a little more complicated than one sentence. Maybe a few sentences…

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FROM?

I get inspiration from nature, art, people walking in the streets, that’s what inspires my imagination.

gardeniaWHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER?

The gardenia.

Byredo-Oud-ImmortelWHAT FRAGRANCE ARE YOU WEARING RIGHT NOW?
Byredo Oud Immortel.

WHAT ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH AT THIS VERY MOMENT ?

I’m obsessed with being here at Ikram’s amazing store in Chicago, I wish I had more time to run around. Chicago is quite a beautiful city.

Thank you for your inspiring FALL 2015 Collection!

Excerpts From Maria Cornejo’s Bio that we thought you may appreciate:

“Since the beginning, and as a result of the company’s commitment to the local economy, the Zero + Maria Cornejo collection has been largely produced (70%) in the heart of New York City’s Garment District with the exception of a few categories, including shoes and handbags, which are made by small, independently owned factories in Italy. Dedicated to fostering a company ethos that is just as committed to its social impact as its environmental, Zero uses ecological and sustainable fabrics wherever possible. And as a company owned and run by women, the team continuously looks to develop special collaborations with women artisans around the world.

This personal approach has gained Zero + Maria Cornejo a loyal following and high praise from fashion insiders and clients like Tilda Swinton, Marisa Tomei, Cindy Sherman and First Lady Michelle Obama”.

ikram® is located at 15 East Huron Street in Chicago’s Gold Coast. Open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, or by appointment. 312.587.1000
