A Lesson in Geometry From Junya Watanabe

Amid the placeholder collections offered by mega lines such as Dior and Lanvin as well as rumors of numerous potential departures from others (Phoebe Philo at Celine, Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent), Japanese designers further dug their heels in the ground this week in Paris. Junya Watanabe, the original protege of Comme des Garçons genius designer Rei Kawakubo, showed his phenomenally creative collection on the fifth day of PFW. Defining the aesthetic of Junya Watanabe is no easy task; however, as explained by Adrian Joffe, president of Comme des Garçons International and partner of Kawakubo, what ties the Comme offshoot lines together is their “desire to create something different.” Something different is precisely what you get from Watanabe’s FW16 collection....

Demna Gvasalia’s Standout Balenciaga Debut

While so many creative directors are coming to an end with their durations at French houses, Demna Gvasalia’s time is only just beginning. Gvasalia, along with his brother, head the anonymous collective comprising VETEMENTS -- which, by any one’s standards, has been a superb success since first showing in 2014. His work elevating VETEMENTS to a prominent line in such short time has placed him in the coveted position as creative director at Balenciaga, a role in which he replaced Alexander Wang. Gvasalia has said he begins his design process by thinking of classic key pieces and reworking them for the modern woman, as evidenced within his debut at Balenciaga. The show opened with a two-piece grey suit, the jacket...

THE SIX BEST LOOKS FROM THE ACADEMY AWARDS

It is a proven fact that color is the way to go to secure yourself on the best dress list at the Academy Awards. Black is normal and expected and one doesn't want to be boring and expected. The starlets in the spotlight all wore color of some sort. Charlize Theron took home the prize as the best dress on the red carpet in Dior Couture. Dior took the evening with the most red carpet dresses. The rule of thumb is to keep it simple with a blast of color. Hopefully this is a lesson Learned, Olivia Wilde in Maison Valentino Brie Larson in Gucci Pryanka Chaopra in Zuhair...

Paris Men’s Fashion Week Part 2

Sebastian Meunier's collections for Ann Demeulemeester never cease to amaze us with their consistency. This season was no different, as the AD boys walked the catwalk in signature style. Cozy, thick wool turtle neck sweaters were worn underneath black vests paired with white floral skinny pants. Silk viscose patched black boots permeated the earlier looks, including the aforementioned. A contrast was observed between flowing, wide cut pants -- some in the same white floral pattern, others of more monochromatic permutations -- and the fitted, ribbed sweaters tucked into them. Long denim coats were seen over fuzzy, extended, horizontally striped mohair button downs and black suede boots with tassels following behind them. Fashion duos of the breed of Kris Van Assche and...

Paris Men’s Fashion Week Part 1

Raf Simons’ recent departure as artistic director of Christian Dior has sparked much discussion and controversy regarding the pace of modern fashion; is it too fast, does it stifle the creative aspect of creative directors, and are they simply left to direct with little time for conception of ideas? Whatever the answers to these questions may be, Raf is back in full force at his eponymous label. Simons offered complex, multi-layered looks this season, with models wearing every thing from oversized cardigans and v-neck sweaters to puffer jackets in a variety of colors. The oversized tops were paired with slim black trousers and black lace-up combat boots to finalize the classic Raf aesthetic. Kim Jones’ titled his latest mens’ collection at...

THE PARIS HAUTE COUTURE

THE PARIS HAUTE COUTURE Haute Couture is the vehicle that drives the sale of perfume and accessories for all Couture houses. Therefore it’s the icing on the cake for many houses of Paris. First up is Dior, Without Raf Simons, of course. It is obvious that a group of twenty something young designers CANNOT design a couture collection much less a ready to wear collection. I’ve always stated that it takes experience to be a leader in this industry. It takes experience to be a relevant stylist, Editor, makeup artist or anything related to the fashion industry. We think that this is a temporary thing until the superstar designer is found . Therefore Dior was simply just another show on the Couture...

Three Must-See Menswear Collections From Milan Fashion Week

The Fall/Winter ‘16 menswear shows continue to trudge on, and this time designers are making their marks in one of the world’s most prestigious fashion capitals: Milan. From Gucci to Prada, Italy offers some of the world’s most well-known and longest standing houses of fashion, and not without good reason. Houses such as the aforementioned offer a certain level of sprezzatura unavailable anywhere else -- effortlessly chic, as if composed entirely by accident. But make no mistake, creative directors such as Gucci’s relatively newly appointed Alessandro Michele are working diligently to produce only the best within their offerings. Alessandro Michele has gone on record to say he “like[s] to make every single thing precious in some way, taking something that you...

“Three Collections From LCM, You Need To Get Familiar With”

The year 2015 has come and gone and what better way to kick off the New Year than LCM? (That’s London Collections Men.) LCM was slated from the eighth through the eleventh with a particularly exciting showing during the latter half; impressive designers among the likes of J.W. Anderson, Alexander McQueen, and last but certainly not least, the iconic, longstanding house of Burberry all showed their latest menswear collections. It’s no secret that during a period of slowdown for some major players (yes, even Prada and Burberry are no longer immune to today’s incessant desire for novelty), menswear has absolutely thrived with seemingly no signs of letting up. While the exact cause for this rapid growth is debatable, we at TMS...

It will begin in London then it moves to Milan and finally it will end like all collections do, with a bang in Paris. Women’s Spring Summer Haute Couture collections, Jan 24th-28th, Paris.
